Active Directory is a data storing service developed by Microsoft. You can use it as a distributed database that stores the information about all company computers and employees.
In addition, it is a network administration tool allowing company administrators assigning group policies, deploying programs across the network and applying critical updates to all computers or groups of computers from a central server.
Active Directory uses equal domain controllers that automatically duplicate all data stored on them and distribute it across the network to prevent its loss or corruption.
The major advantage of Active Directory is that the administrator can configure and administrate user computers from the central server and there is no need to configure each computer separately. As a distributed database, Active Directory stores all the information about company IT structure.
For Active Directory backup, best practices allow storing copies of this database securely and firmly, providing much automation for copying Active Directory backup step by step to separate, secure storage media, such as 3-2-1 or Grandfather-Father-Son backup to S3 or SFTP servers.
Active Directory has become popular with middle-sized and large-sized organization because it allows administrating large networks using the DNS structure similar to that of the Internet.
Although Active Directory allows replication of data across servers, this option is not enough for reliable backup. It lacks some things such as Active Directory backup schedule, things necessary for complex backup strategies, as well as uses too few available storage types.
Sometimes, you can lose or compromise data stored on server, because of natural disasters such as flood, fire or a hurricane that can damage all company servers. Human error is another thing that can resist the system to function properly.
An example: If the administrator made a mistake while creating group policies or deploying enterprise services, the system will replicate this mistake to the rest of the servers, deteriorating the situation rather than improve it. Here, the Active Directory backup is a good answer!
Another situation occurs when a third party backup tool such as Handy Backup as a part of company security policy. In this case, you can make the entire Active Directory backup and recovery at any time when you need, recovering all functions of your company network.
